With genetics, we can get a hint at our origins, but never the full picture. So to argue that "Mediterranean" or "African" or whatever ethnic group could never have been here becomes ludicrous.
Howdy Brent and List. Why do we need genetics to determine this. I have followed these Melungeon studies for several years and have read most folks books, but I don't know of anyone who has ever argued that the Mediterranean or African could never have been here. It would make more sense to argue that most families who have been here since Columbus would probably have some Mediterranean and or Africa Genes, and some were mixed before they left Europe, plus the fact we know by old colonial records the turks, the spanish, the blacks and almost everyone else was arriving on these shores. Now this leaves the Natives. So the question seems to be if the black was several generations removed it would not show, the same is true of NA after several generations of marring whites it would not show, but thanks to those old tax and census workers they sometimes noted our dark skin forefathers and it would then fall to those families to identify their race. On this note I will add anyone w!
ho cannot find a family member so designated lets say from 1830 back to teh 1600's they will most likely not be a Melungeon descendant. Also, you find very few people listed in census records after 1850 as mulatto, It seems you families black or Indian ancestors were several generations removed for them to be white when others in the same NC area where listed mulatto. The Melungeons were seperated by being designated as FPC and treated different than the whites in the same neighborhood. Thanks, Frank
