This was a great idea Brent, and thanks for the reposting. I think even
the old hats like myself need to be reminded that Plecker did not think the
Melungeons were just 4 names in Hancock county.
Although my people lived in Sneedville for over 100 years, I have not found
the 4 names on a very short list. I do however have many ancestors who's
names are found on the Plecker list, in the right place at the right time
Adams, Adkins, Bass, Roberts, Ramsey, Mays, Robinson, Sheppard, Johnson, Thomas, and although not on the Plecker list
Howdy Kelly: I checked these family and they were not enumerated as mulatto or free persons of color in Hancock County. Most families could have an African ancestor say 1000 years ago and no trace of it would show if they continued to marry whites and some of these especially named by Paul Heinegg would not show up in census records. The Melungeons were all enumerated as FPC and in old tax records as mulatto, I don't know of one Melungeon that was not enumerated FPC or mulatto in some records, this is an excuse used by some to claim their family was free persons of color, but a free person of color was so recognized in land, court, tax or census record. , on the Hiengg web site, my Ruben Lantern, who was a FPC This was the best idea I have seen here in a long while
