Hi Judy,
Can you please forward this to the Melungeon List for me. Whenever I try to
do it, I get an error message. Think it is because I have a MAC machine.
Thanks! Beth

http://www.candoo.com/genresources/1638barbadoslist.txt this websight shows
who owned land in barbados in the Year 1638. Look for richard and John
Sisemore. this the anglican way of saying cisamore. Now read this on Jews of
the caribbean . http://www.sefarad.org/publication/lm/011/jewcar.html this
article will help clear up a lot of questions on melungeon jews.
A synagogue for Sephardis, the Jews of Spanish or Portuguese descent, had
been established in Barbados in the 1650's. The settlers named this first
Barbados synagogue Nidhe Israel, "The Dispersed Ones of Israel". The
original Barbados synagogue building is still standing but no longer serves
as a place of worship. The attached cemetery is in disrepair but the
inscriptions on the headstones were copied and have been saved. They provide
important historical and genealogical data for researchers. The Jewish
cemetery on Barbados is believed to be the oldest Jewish graveyard in the
Western Hemisphere with citations dating back to the 1660's. Graves of
several famous people are there, including Samuel Hart, son of the American
Moses Hart, and Mosseh Haym Nahamyas (Moses Nehemiah), who died on Barbados
in 1672 and was the first Jew to live in Virginia (AJA 18).
this were the sisemore family worhiped at Beth Nidhe Israel. I have a close
friend who is a jew from brazil who's family came to America in this
diaspora in 1600's.

Barbados Link to Melungeon Surnames
Melungeon ancestry possibilities have expanded to include
significant numbers of "English" and "Scotch" settlers who came to South
Carolina in the late 1600s and early 1700s,
but not from England. Although these people held English citizenship, their
actual ethnic make-up was far different from the prototype Anglos
of that period. These settlers were from Barbados, ethnically mixed people
seeking better lives in the mainland colonies.
These so-called "freedmen" tended to be a mixture of English and
Scotch, native Barbadians (i.e. Indian), Portuguese Jews, other
Mediterranean people, and Africans. And,
most telling, their surnames match those English names that most commonly
show up among the earliest Melungeon populations. It would seem likely
that, over time, these ethnically mixed "Englishmen" would have indeed moved
northward and admixed with Melungeon ancestral groups in the Carolinas and
Virginia. There are many related documents detailing the movements of these
early settlers, but one will suffice for this first announcement (this
document kindly provided by Angela Andrews of the University of Virginia).
John Camden Hotten's work on the Barbados settlers provides the following
astonishing surname list of "English" settlers from Barbados: (see below
for Library of Congress citations)
Freedman
Clark
Hall
Kennedy
Phipps
Portuguese Jews
Atkins
Cole
Isham
Miner
Sizemore
