Hi Janet,
I'm aware of the various J1 groups. This would also go to the issue
of whether Portuguese DNA is possible. So, seeing this list is quiet,
it's a good time to discuss it.
Are you saying that this article is completely depending on the J1.
For others, here's an interesting article @
http://www.ftdna.com/pdf/HaploJ.pdf
Also, you mentioned that you couldn't tell where the Crains came from
in order to justify lore as possible fact for possible females adding
to the Melungeon mix as Portuguese.
The point I was making about Y-DNA was that it definitely goes back to
the 1400s and, if there is Portuguese or Spanish in there, it will
show up at some point within a family. That is, one will have exact
matches or a mutation or two off from a bonifide Portuguese or Spanish
family or two or three. It is definitely better than lore without
even surnames... Curtis is right there.
So, if NOT Ydna, can't the various Melungeon surnames individually
through projects be traced and links possibly determined for further
research? Also, can't one zig-zag through maternal names and do that
mtDNA testing?
I simply don't understand why some lore is discounted and other is
purported to be fact. Upon what do you base your chosen Melungeon
families' lore as possible fact?
Thanks,
Donalyn
