Anita; We are all the sum total of all our ancestors input. Thousands of
people. Every male ancestor's Y and mtDNA, because they have both and every
female ancestor's mtDNA. And so much more. Y and mtDNA are tiny portions of
who we are. They don't contribute that much to our over all genetic make up.
They were chosen by scientists as tracer markers because they remain intact
at conception. They pass virtually unchanged onto the next generation. But
all the other genes are shuffled and in addition even exchange some portions
of genetic material with each other. That is what makes breeding so
fascinating. Which is certainly getting away from humans, but every breeder
knows you could take the two best race horses in the world and mate them and
get very poor results. It is the statistical likihood that the results will
be outstanding that drives the race horse industry and all such endeavors.
You are correct that you can only be tested for the mtDNA, because that is
all you personally can be tested for. Cousins can be tested for other lines.
Brothers for your Dad's Y chromosome. There are Biological Tests for the
autosomal DNA (which is what all the other DNA is called) but no one has
invented a very sensitive test as yet.
A new test is coming, promised to be a lot better. Get your mtDNA now if you
want to but save your money for the new autosomal test. Just MHO. LOL
Y and mt are important mainly for proving or disproving relationships.
Although the knowledge about your deep ancestry can be facsinating. But it
is not a "be all end all" thing.
Ernie, I do appreciate your input.
Janet
