I think Dennis that in the Portuguese you could find the African ancestry as
well as from other areas. I also think that each family could be different
depending on who married whom. I think Joanne is on the right track as far
as the beginnings of these families. And it is interesting that even with
the Portuguese/Indian/AA ethnic make-up they meet the criteria spoke so
early by anthropologists of tri-racial isolates. Portuguese being European.
There were so many different "refugees" coming into America's shores at this
time that many people are not aware of. For years we hear about a couple of
explorers and then the pilgrims, (at least years ago in history classes
before the dinosaurs when I went to school.):) but there were so many
different groups making up the ethnic backdrop of colonial America.
Joanne should be applauded, I know she has worked hard on helping us solve
"our mystery" and I think she has discovered a piece to the puzzle here.

Interesting stuff, Joanne.
As we all know -- and as some of your material illustrates -- there
was a heavy price to be paid in those days for having black ancestry.
And some people argue that the Melungeons claims of Portuguese
ancestry was nothing but a cover story to hide black ancestry, wrongly
implying that if they had black ancestry their claims of Portuguese
ancestry must be false.
Do you think the Melungeons of the early 19th century had no black
ancestry? Or do you think they had both black and Portuguese ancestry
and used the latter to help hide the former? Or do you think they had
black ancestry but were unaware of it?
Dennis
