Does anyone have any information about SISCO/CISCO/FRANCISCO?
I am interested in tracing the purported Cherokee ancestry claimed by at
least one branch of the family in the SISCO line possibly through the MILLERs
and or their other associated families' ancestry .
Their associated families include: MILLER, WILSON, COLLINS/COLLIER, and
others. The branch I am most interested in was in or near Oveton County,
Tennessee and moved on to the Osage, Carroll County, Arkansas are. John SROKA has
written a book about the PHILLIPS family that includes them: A WORKBOOK ON
THE PHILLIPS FAMILY OF OVERTON COUNTY, TENNESSEE.
It traces Thomas SISCO?CISCO (1800) back to the 18300 Oveton County,
Tennessee Census and find him in Uppser Osage, Conway, Arkansas and in Osage,
Carroll, Arkansas for 1840, 18 50, 1 960, and 1870 census reports . He died in
1872. He married Nancy MILLER whose MILLER family was alleged to have strong
Cherokee ties.
Other SISCO males include:
>>Sam CISCO/SISCO who appears in Osage, Carroll C., Ark. census reprots
form 1850-1880;
>>Houston SISCO who appears in various Carroll C., Ark. locations in all of
the census years from 18160-1910. He died in 1910;
>>Emberson SISCO who also appears in Osage, Carroll C, Ark. 1850, 1870, 1880
with death year 1910;
>>Marshall and/or Manual CISCO/SISCON/SISCO who appears in various counties
of Carroll County, Ark. from 1850 to 1870 in census reports and then moves to
Kings River, Madison, Ark. for 1880 and 1900. He died in 1902. Middle
initial possibly "A."
>>Granville CISCO/SISCO appears in Osage, Carroll C., Ark from 1850 t o 1880
and died in 1893.
>>Franklin CISCO appears in Osage,, Carroll C., Ark. in 1850 and 1860
reports and died in 1863.
>>Thomas CISCO/SISCO shows up in Osage, Carroll C., Ark. from 1850 to 1880.
He died in 1913.
Female SISCO/CISCO members by birth or marriage include:
Nancy (MILLER) CISCO/SISCO from 18150 to 1870. DIed 1875. Allged to be part
Cherokee. Picture appears on Paul Ridenour's site (url below). Nancy's
father was Hugh MILLER. In some histories, SROKA notes, Hugh MILLER was known as a
medicine man and family legend suggest he may have been "full-blooded"
Cherokee.
Amanda (SISCO)WILSON in 1850 and 1860 in Overton, Tennessee.
Married Anderson "Andrew" WILSON.
Manerva WILSON died at eight. She in in the 1850 Osage, Carroll C., Ark.
census.
Jane CISCO shows up in thee 1860, 1860 and 1880 census reports. No census
for 1870 found yet.
She is in Osage, Carroll C. and Crockeed Creek, Carroll C, Ark. census
reports.
Tennessee SISCO shows up first in 1860 in Osage, Carroll C, Ark. and in 1870
as Tennessee COLLINS. Then in 1880 she is in Carrollton, Carroll, Ark. as
Tennessee COLLIER.
She moves to Hickory, Carroll C, Ark. and is found in 1900, 1910 as
Tennessee COLLIER and stays with that name and spelling in the 1920 and 1930 census
reports in Green Forest, Carroll, Ark. She died in 1936.
The above is from pages 147-148 of the SROKA book. I tried to trace Hugh
MILLER to Native American ancestry and didn't get too far. I did find that
there was a POSSIBLE BOLLING link that led to a Hugh MILLER but much much
earlier. I could not find children or nephews that would carry on the name Hugh
MILLER. There may be a link and it does seem likemore than a coincidence,
especially given that these BOLLINGS lead to the ROLFE/POWHATAN connection -
purportedly; we all know what hazards there are in Pocahontas research. I already
had a Jean/Jane BOLLING married to a Hugh MILLER in my trees who was
supposed to go back to John ROLFE and Matoaka Pocahontas POWHATAN. There was a
BOLING in SROKA's book and I researched her to see if she would lead to a John
BOLLING; she did but only if I made huge assumptions and guesses; the ground was
shaky.
I have seen Paul Rideneour's site, which has pictures of Martha Jane
PHILLIPS, Nancy MILLER and SISCO males. It also has more information about other
relatives and includes this preface.

"Here are the three main branches that I encountered during my research.
There is Old Henry Francisco. He lived to be very old and has a lot of
information on the internet. His descendants stayed pretty much in the NJ/NY area.
The second group are those descended from Peter Francisco. They stayed
pretty much VA. Then there are the descendants of Christophel Franciscus (an
alternate spelling is Frantziscus [might be German]). Those who stayed in PA
and MD kept the spelling, but those who moved south into VA became Francisco.
In general, this branch is found in VA, WV, KY, TN, MO, and a few moved into
AR. I am leaning in this direction. The first Sisco in our line was
Sanders C. Sisco, Sr. I think that his father was John Francisco, but I have no
proof" - Glen Sisco
Does this sound like a possible Sephardic name? The German cognate Glen
SISCO mentions might bring up other possibilities. Any documented evidence would
be welcome.
I have both ALFORD and PHILLIPS (and possibly BOLLING) ancestors who appear
to connect to these families.
