I have a HALFORD (a variant of ALFORD) line from eastern South Carolina,
possibly originally
from somewhere in North Carolina. (There are HALFORDs on 19th century North
Carolina censuses,
primarily in Rutherford County, apparently.) I haven't been able to trace my
HALFORDs back out
of South Carolina. There are two HALFORD households on the 1790 South
Carolina census and
mine connect to one of those. There are many many variants of these two
names on 1800s
censuses, with and without H's and with either As or Os. There is an ALFORD
AMERICAN
FAMILY ASSOCIATION, which possibly holds annual meetings. (I have spent
several
years with tight finances so have never been able to afford to join this or
some other organizations
I would dearly love to join.) The AAFA has been on the Web: if they still
are, you can find
them with Google.
It's very possible there is some Native American/American Indian/Melungeon
in my Halfords,
especially in a maternal line from eastern South Carolina (HEAPE/JAUDON)
with Huguenot
ancestry.
I don't have any SISCOs that I'm aware of, but I attended a high school
summer program in
Louisiana with a SISCO from somewhere in Texas (maybe Lake Charles, LA,
which is on
the border). Many of the kids in the program had one or both parents
involved in the
oil industry, working in refineries, back when that was a booming industry
in Louisiana
and Texas, so her family might possibly have come from the area you
mentioned. (I
lost my list of addresses from this program years ago and we've never had a
newsletter
or anything like that.)
