It doesn't appear anyone is going to answer but from the lack of response I
would say the facts have not been presented correctly. I have not found
anything that says the men involved in the illegal voting trials in Hancock
County said they were Portuguese --
The *documented* Melungeons in Hamilton County are on record claiming
Portuguese since the 1840s, and were known as Portuguese in South Carolina
before removing to Tennessee. *If* the Melungeons on Newman's Ridge used the
Portuguese defense in 1846 they probably borrowed it from the Hamilton
County Melungeons
