They said they were"Portegee" (Portuguese) and Indian; they did not ever say they were Portuguese, Indian, Black and white.  Various families had various admixtures based on subsequent marriages.  I agree there is no mystery to the Melungeons, they told us where they came from and I think for the most part the ones from Newman Ridge can be documented.

There *was* Portuguese in the Mountains and the Melungeons *were* 
Portuguese.  They said they were Portuguese who mixed with Indians, blacks  and
whites.  They had no reason to lie about being  Portuguese.  There is really
nothing confusing or mysterious -  there never has been.
