My research for slave ancestors in the family of Hutchinson, Johnston,
Keen, Cave -- takes me to interesting places.

I'm going to try and make the Hutchinson via the KEEN family connection
and hope I don't loose you...cause it picks up in Boone Co., MO. When I
ordered some papers on the Hutchinsons from the Western Historical
Manuscript Collection -- there were names I couldn't connect... but
somehow LLOYD, ISRAELL, KEENE, HUTCHINSON and THOMAS connected. The
Hutchinsons and Thomas relatives show up in the will of Capt. William H.
Johnston m. Rachel Spears. [The KYN or KEEN mentioned in his will is:
Sarah Keen wife of James S. Keen of Audrain Co., MO] in addition to the
Keenes and I was racking my brain trying to figure out what the hell was
going on. All these folks and the same names used in each line over and
over again.

I compiled will and probate listing from Boone Co., MO connecting the
Johnston, Keen, Thomas, Prewitt and Branham families and wanted to make
sense of who I was dealing with -- they all have Bourbon Co ties -- as
well as ties in Pennsylvannia -- Pittsburg. My focus is the JOHNSTON &
HUTCHINSON families and their allied folks. [If you are interested in my
list; I compiled it using the Wills and Administration records of Boone
CO., MO by Mrs. E.E. Evans and Mrs. J. F. Thompson 1932. You can order
the book from the Genealogical Society of Central Missouri.

Bottom line; Bourbon Co., KY native Benjamin Franklin Hutchinson -- son
of William Hutchinson and Margaret Hickman Hutchinson; brother to
Margaret Hutchinson who married William H. Johnston [owner of my
ancestors who came from Bourbon Co., [Paris] KY and his wife's family
and his have links via Pittsburg, PA] and then second she married
Nathaniel Leonard at Ravenswood [my ancestors were slaves on this
plantation] in Bunceton MO; had one son named William Hutchinson.
Benjamin Franklin Hutchinson died in Kirkwood, MO Oct. 10th, 1876.
William's son Benjamin Frankin Hutchinson married Eliza Ann Israel1! [I
have a letter from Charles E. Leonard dated July 6, 1893 -- son of
Margaret Hutchinson and Nathaniel Leonard who writes an extensive letter
to the grandson of Mr. Lewis Hutchinson [Margaret's brother] late of
Pittsburg, PA. I can not read his first name well.. but his last name
is Warfield. I also have a will of William Hutchinson of Kirkwood MO;
who mentions his wife Mary Alice, and son Benjamin Frankin and his wife
Eliza Ann... dated April 8, 1914. Margaret Hutchinson Johnston Leonard's
other brother James S. Hutchinson married Martha V. Tutt -- the Tutts
also owned my ancestors who came to Callaway Co., MO from Culpepper and
Farquier Co., VA. Some of my people changed their names from TUTT to
MILES.

Here's a quick diddy to make the KEEN tie.

Mathias and Elias Keen married sisters Margaret and Hannah Thomas. The
Thomas sisters had a brother Nathan who married Rebecca Cottman; their
daughter Susan Thomas married Jesse Waterman, whose daughter Rebecca
Waterman m. Allen Cuthbert of Germantown, and whose granddaughter Susan
Thomas m. Charles H. Israell and removed to Pittsburg, PA. Their
daughter Eliza Israell m. Benjamin Hutchinson; their daughter Caroline
C. Israell m. Joseph Lloyd. and their daughter Sarah Israell m. William
Rodman Olden. Their daughter Susannah Cottman m. Joseph Harberson and
their daughter Hannah Cottman m. Thomas Nightingale. Do you follow --
the Thomas line of children married into the Israell line and also then
Benjamin Hutchinson and then Lloyd and Olden. This tied the pieces up I
had for a will of Catherine Wilkens Israell: Caroline C. Llloyd of
Ellsville, St. Louis, Mary Israell of 322 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh, PA,
Sarah Olden of Seranton, PA; Henry C. Israell of San Francisco, CA;
ELIZA HUTCHINSON LLOYD of Ellsville, St. Louis Co., MO, Catherine
Wilkins Olden of Oakland California; William Hutchinson of St. Louis, MO
and Charles Du Pont Breck of Seranton, PA -- all of whom were party to a
transaction recorded in Poughkeepsie Co., NY. I believe the NY
connection is Joseph Lloyd who married Beulah S. Emlen of NY, NY in
1830. Their son Joseph married Caroline Correy Israell daughter of
Charles Hutchinson Israell and Sarah Thomas.

I have collected more detailed information on the Israell, Lloyd family
ties in St. Louis if you are interested. I can not vouch for all the
information above; but most of it I gleaned from personal papers via
special collections on the families noted above.

Hope this helps some one. My interest is wills, probate, land deed and
bible records which may shed some light on slaves owned in the
Hutchinson/Johnston family. For example, I have just learned that
Thomas McClanahan father of Peggy McClanahan who married RObert Johnston
-- father of the Capt. William H. Johnston m. Rachel Spears; inherited a
tavern and slaves from Mr. McClanahan. So a will of Mr. McClanahan and
Mr. Robert Johnston -- may prove helpful in how Mr. Robert Johnston and
his sons acquired slaves.
