I was recently contacted by a woman who knew the parents of one of my
many times grandmothers, Rebecca Deter. Rebecca was born in Maryland
(possibly Washington Co) in 1811 and married Jacob Hossinger in Richland
Co, OH. Family history states that Rebecca was part American Indian.

My wonderful contact was able to tell me that Rebecca's parents were
Philip Deter (Teeter) and Elizabeth. She was also able to tell me that
Philip was identified as the husband of Elizabeth in a MD deed relating
to
Elizabeth's father, Martin Bellwise. She had not been able to read the
actual document and felt that Bellwise is not the correct spelling of
Martin's last name.

Please help me play the name game - my imagination has come up with
Martin Bell Wise. And isn't going any farther! Any suggestions as to
how the name may be transcribed incorrectly are more than welcome. None
of the search engines I have tried have turned up anyone named Bellwise
and soundex doesn't turn up any variation that is plausible.

Is anyone aware of a relationship between the Deter/Teeter family and
any of the southeastern tribes?
