To everyone on list that might be able to help
I have to do a project on cultural awareness, I will be giving a speach and
hope that this information is an accurate portrayal of tribal practices. I
realize that most Lenape that will be met today on the east coast especialy
will have more european tendancies, but I hope that the rest here is
accurate. Please correct any mistakes in judgement I may have made, again I
wish this to be an acurate speach regarding your culture. I got this
information from a book, but I have heard that the information may not be
correct, and since I wanted it to be accurate, I thought I would go right
to you and ask. I don't want to tell my class the wrong thing because after
I deliver my "speach" that will be what they go by as a foundation for
dealing with Lenape people.

The topics I have to discuss are:

Birth:
Pain management
Nausea
Post partum depression
Pregnancy care
recuperation practices
Infant care

Death:
preparation for death
home vs hospital
attutudes toward organ donation <and blood donor>
Attitudes towards autopsy

Food:
typical meal pattern
usual diet
fluids/teas
special recipies
preparation

"Speach Part"

Since the Lenape have been in contact with the european culture most
traditional values have been long ago burried in their past. The Native's of
the eastern seaboard have long been forbidden to practice their tribal
practices publicly. There is a strong sence of ethnic unity. Clan membership
is passed down through the mother.

Birth:
Pain management : management by deep breathing, much like Lamaze.
Nausea: treated with some teas.
Post partum depression: Mother usually has help from extended family.
Pregnancy care: pre natal care is standard
recuperation practices: The mother usually has help from family. Typically a
fast recovery is attained.
Infant care: Infants are lovingly cared for.
Dicipline is handled by Strong words, and guidance, force is not used to
correct behavior.

Death..
Preparation for death:
Most American Indian cultures have ceremonies to perform that vary per
tribe.
The Lenape wish to be presant with the dying person. The atmosphere may be
lighthearted, with joking.
Small chaldren are included. The outcome is recognized but a positive
attitude is maintained. Family may
avoid discussion of impending death. Once the person is deceased there are
outward signs of grieving.
home vs hospital
Some prefer to avoid the clinical environment of the hospital. Unless
absolutely nessescary.
care of the body afterward
Purification may be requested. Family may wish to have all the deceased's
posessions to be taken home.
attutudes toward organ donation <and blood donor>
Generally organ donation is not desired.
Attitudes towards autopsy
Generally autopsy is not desired.

Food: Generally a stationary tribe, a majority of their food came from
farming. Modernization has assimilated most Lenape into eurocentric eating
patterns.
typical meal pattern: generally 3 times a day
usual diet: average diet, with vegetables, meat, and such
fluids/teas: Same as average diet
special recipies: None recorded
preparation bake, broil or fry.
