My name is Bill Gill I am doing research on my Indian Heritage. I'll try
not to bore you with too many details.

My story begins with a Mrs Gill, a white woman with blue eyes ,who came from
Canada, (probably Quebec) to Baltimore County, Maryland in the late 1820's or
early 1830's. With her were her Indian son and Indian daughter, Joshua born
1809 and Sallie possibly born after 1814? Mrs Gill's first name is unknown.

I know that Joshua was a Weaver by trade and he married in 1838 which was
sometime after his Mother died. Joshua Gill was my GG Grandfather.
Apparently, Joshua left the Maryland family farm to find work wherever he
could. He appears back with his wife on an 1880 census as 70 years old and
his trade is listed as Weaver. Sometime after that date he went away and was
never heard from again.

His sister Sallie is said to have moved to New York after her mother died.
Most of the information that I have came from a 1933 newspaper interview of
one of Joshua's sons, Thomas Gill. If you are interested, the article can be
found on my homepage http://hometown.aol.com/mwgill/index.html
Just click on the link titled The Indian Connection.

I am aware that there are quite a few Gills in the Abenaki tribes in Canada
and New England, but I cannot make a connection. Also, Joshua is an English
name and the Abenaki did not have much to do with the English. I cannot find
any Abenaki's named Joshua, so I suspect that he was from another tribe.

Thank you for taking the time to hear my story. Any advice or information
would be greatly appreciated.
