Thanks for the info. about the Osage Tribe names. It can certainly make it
difficult to trace a family lineage - for outsiders.
One of my Native Sister Veterans (Pine Ridge Sioux) told me that they
hyphenate their surnames with the mother's and the father's to bring honor
to the mother's family. [Mother's surname-Father's surname].

Two cents worth on Osage Names:
In the Osage Tribe, known as a Warrior Tribe, Warrior names often changed
with the couragous deeds of that Warrior. A man could be expected to be
given several names over a lifetime.
When Western Man married into the Osage Tribe, the women of the Tribe, at
times, passed their white name down through their daughters. It is not
unusual to find the all the daughters of an Osage man carrying the last name
of his father-in-law or even grand father-in-law, while his sons carried an
earned name.

Here are a few Native Language links that I thought may help with
genealogy searches. There are 'several reasons' for name designations or
name changes. Sometimes names were changed by a direct translation, from
Native to English - then sometimes names were changed because they were
misspelled, often times names indicate specific regions...
