There are no reservations in West Virginia. We don't have any federal or
state recognized tribes here either. However, there are many people of mixed
blood who moved into the state after the removal and have been here ever
since.
I have a question about the possible Monacan presence in West Virginia in
the 1600s. There are several villages on the Kanawha River that were
occupied in the 1500-1600s that were abandoned by the time the first
Europeans arrived around 1750. Some people think they may have been Siouan.
One village in particular was reported by Gabriel Arthur to be Moneton. I
have also read about Mosopelea that may have been in WV. Anyone have any
information about these tribes?
