Hi Everybody,
Here's a little more information I've recently found out. Does any of this connect with anything anyone else has, or is working on?:
My great grandmother is Lula FISHER (sometimes "Lulu"), born 1888 or '89 in Dagsborough, who married Thomas McCOOG in Phila. in 1906, and died in 1967 in Lenola, NJ, near where they'd rented a house on a farm earlier. (Tom died in the 1940s.)
Lula's parents were Miranda (or Maranda) JOSEPH and James FISHER. We think Miranda was born around 1852 in Sussex County, DE, and died around 1929, possibly in MD, PA, or NJ, but probably not DE - the Archives have no Death Cert. (nor anything else!!) for her.
James was born in DE, and died(?) between around 1891 and 1900 - he doesn't appear with the family in the 1900 Census. Lula always described him as "a Welsh fisherman".
Lula's 11(?) siblings include Benjamin Harrison ("Harry"), Charles, "Pete," Clara, Anne or Nan, and Amos, FISHER.
In 1900 Lula appears as a "servant" in the household of Harriet VESSELS and her adult son Alphonso, in Indian River Hundred. Lula said she'd worked since age 8, including a stint in a mill where she had to work standing on a crate all day because she was so small. No further details.
In 1900 Miranda appears renting in Broadkiln [sic] Hundred, with sons Harry, Amos, and Charles.
Our FISHERS had relatives in Lewes or Rehoboth, DE; Glen Burnie, MD; and Chestertown, MD; at least as late as the 1950s. One of them was named Marguerite FISHER.
Miranda's mother, Lula said, "was an Indian." We have no name or info yet.
Thanks for everything,
Leo Peter O'Filon
