Just fyi - I live in North Western Wake Co NC and am not too far from
Durham, Granville & Franklin counties. In my daily driving out here in the
country (I'm in what's considered Northern Raleigh) I discover many, many
small family cemeteries that no longer appear to be tended to.
If anyone out there has an old family cemetery they suspect is falling way
to dissappearance, I'm happy to hunt yours down and photo it for
preservation purposes.
Since I moved to my new home in February, my house is on what used to be a
tobacco farm, and the original farmhouse is right behind the huge fence
(developers put up to disguise) at the back of our property. We bought
several acres and discovered the old house while combing the grounds and
locating flowers, shrubs, bushes and beautiful trees that clearly were once
part of someone's front yard. Their old iris's even bloomed back there!
The old family cemetery graves were relocated by the developer fortunately,
but that often doesn't happen if people can get away with it.
Just 1/4 down the road I've located many old graves here in Wake Co that are
of the original families that lived here. Most of the road names were named
after them, and their graves are just decaying away forever... It breaks my
heart.
If any of these surnames ring a bell, let me know and I
can send you pix of the graves that I've discovered that are in great need
of attention:
PENNY
ALLEN
CARPENTER
RAY
NORWOOD
GLENN (and all variant spellings)
HOLLOWAY
PRICE
LYNN
KEITH
LAYTON
