Bob,
Thanks for sending me the link to the updated list of Surry County
cemeteries. The links I have on the Surry County page are the ones that are
on the Surry County NCGenWeb site. I will definitely update the links to the
ones that you have updated on Cemetery Census.
I also agree with you on people that snag photos and transcriptions and post
as their own. I have found that has happened to me on a lot of occasions up
to and including hacking into one of my old servers and downloading the
larger files of cemetery photos directly from it.
I have found that most Find A Grave submissions aren't accurate or don't
contain any locations for the cemetery or they are listed under a wrong name
There are a few Find A Grave volunteers that send their photos to me or
allow me to copy them once they are posted to add to the site. However, on
theirs, I just take the photos and do the transcriptions myself. No, I don't
take anyone else's but the people that have given me permission to do so. :
)
I have also noticed that some Find A Grave volunteers say they have posted
this or that cemetery and give me permission to copy them, or brag about how
much they have posted, but when you do a little research and look into them
they aren't the ones that posted the information at all, they just added a
virtual flower or a message to some of the people listed in the cemetery. So
needless to say I am very careful on who's information I will post, and the
people that have tried to get over and say they have posted info and it isn
t theirs I have a list of and I won't be using any info they submit to me.
In the future, would you be interested in sending a copy of cemetery photos
that you take to me so that I can post them to the site? I will gladly do
the transcriptions form the photos so you won't have to do that. If not, I
completely understand, had to ask though. : )

Just a note, but many of the cemeteries you listed for Surry County have
Been updated, so if you want a one stop shopping (which is a good thing) you
Need to find a way to make and keep the list current.
The cemeteries I've surveyed in Surry County over the years (many of which
Have been updated) are now posted at
http://cemeterycensus.com/nc/surr/index.htm. This is also the official
Repository for cemetery surveys for the Surry County Genealogical
Association. There are also cemeteries posted for other counties as well
And the site owner accepts any and all data submitted to him, some of who
Are genealogy associations in various NC counties.
In reading some of the replies that also mentioned Find-A-Grave, I'd like to
Voice an opinion. I'll start by saying I'm also a contributor to that site
But several of their contributors (at least for Surry County) who post
Burial records or photos have taken them from other sites. I know because I
Found 3 different people who "clipped" my photos and posted them as their
Own. I alerted the site owners of the issue but to date nothing has been
Done. You'd think those who want to post information would at least
Contacted me and gotten permission to use a photo, but they didn't. One of
Them even took some of my surveys and posted them as their own. Even though
Birth and death records are not copyright protected because they are facts,
The whole thing is tacky, tacky, tacky.
When I put information on the web I'm well aware there will always be some
Who'll take my photos and post it elsewhere as if it were their own. But at
Least they could give credit to those who do the actual leg work, and
Computer work, to generate the data to begin with. It's sad that personal
Integrity and honesty has taken a back seat to the desire of others to be
Recognized for something they did not do.
