I found your family in (of course) the last John Yates I checked. :))

Roll 642, pages 281, 282
1850 Richmond County, North Carolina, Wolf Pit District, September 4, 1850
452/453 Yates, John, age 33, male, Farmer, RE $225, born North Carolina
Ann, age 30, female, born North Carolina
Emeline or Eveline, age 10, female, born North Carolina
Hirum?, age 09, male, born North Carolina
Isaac, age 07, male, born North Carolina
William, age 03, male, born North Carolina
Susan, age 02, female, born North Carolina

The only other Yates listed in the Wolf Pit District is a 60-year-old Martha Yates, living in a Peavy household on page 283.

Hope this helps. Sorry, I do not have access to 1860 North Carolina census, but perhaps someone else will be able to check Richmond County for this family for you.
