I am not sure what you are asking for. You didn't include a year or a
county to search, so I searched for any John Reynolds indexed in North
Carolina in 1850 who would have been born about 1809. Because the request
is so vague, I did not bother to check for J-initialed Reynolds. Of course
I have no way of knowing if this one is yours, or if he had a brother named
William, but this is the closest match in the 1850 NC index - based on your
request:

1850 Greene County, North Carolina - September 27, 1850 - page 248
588 - John Reynolds, age 40; farmer; $600; born NC
Lany, age 27, female; born NC
James, age 3; born NC
Marth, age 1, female; born NC
George, age 4 months; born NC
Sarah, age 55; born NC

In the 1860 census, the above John Reynolds gave his birth year as 1803
instead of 1809. In 1860, the only John Reynolds indexed who indicated that
he was born in 1809 is this one:

1860 Rockingham County, North Carolina - Northern Division - August 3,
1860 - page 131
892 - John M. Reynolds, age 50; merchant; $5000/35000; born TN
F. E., age 34, female; born VA
