Coleen,
I am not up on Montgomery County history, but for some reason I can't find
the 1820 census database for that particular county anywhere. Lost? Burned
in a war?
There are 857 Smith households indexed in other NC counties.
In 1830 Montgomery, there are 26 Smiths indexed. Can you tell me what your
John A. named his first son? Sometimes that's a clue - and don't give up.
My GGgrandfather, John Smith (with no middle initial to help), was from
North Carolina also, so I know how you feel.
Good luck,
Linda in Georgia
