ELKIN - Mr. Lewis Fleet Mathis, 96, of Victoria Street, Elkin, was called Home to be with our Lord at 2:15 Sunday morning, April 22, 2007, after a brief illness.

He was born March 6, 1911, in Iredell County to D.C., and Jurella Lunsford Mathis.

Mr. Mathis was preceded in death by his parents; and six brothers, Graham of Snow Camp; Rex of Winston-Salem; Troy Alexandria of Virginia; Guy of Elkin; Hal of Winston-Salem; and Joe of San Francisco, Calif.

Mr. Mathis graduated from Rural Hall High School and retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. where he worked in accounting and purchasing. After retiring, he earned his realtor license and worked in real estate for a few years. He helped organize Elkin' s Little League baseball program where he coached for several years. He was an avid golfer, active in the Republican Party and Elkin Masonic Lodge, where he was a Master Mason and Past Master. Mr. Mathis loved his Lord, his family and his church. Until recent years, he was an active member of First Baptist Church of Elkin where he served as Sunday-school superintendent, teacher and deacon.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Hazel Jarvis Mathis; and four children, Sara Carter (Stony) of Elkin; John (Luann) Mathis of Elkin; Sally Hutchens of Winston-Salem; and Davis (Diane) Mathis of Elkin; three grandchildren; and three great-grand children.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, at Elkin First Baptist Church, with Dr. Bill Johnson and the Rev. Rebecca Maynard officiating. Burial with full Masonic rites will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 this evening, April 23, at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Baptist Children' s Homes of North Carolina or Ebenezer Gardens Christian Children' s Home of North Wilkesboro. Hodges Funeral Home is serving the Mathis family.
