My 4th great-grandmother was 'Selah Hughes' b. abt 1775 N.C. d. bef 1840 Pendleton Dist.,, S.C. Selah was a Cherokee Indian and she married a man who was at least 3/4 Cherokee, probably more. Selah is the Cherokee word for 'corn' and your Selah is the first I have seen this name spelled precisely in this way.
Of course the diploma you found could not be my Selah, however, there could be a Cherokee link to this lady... just thought it worth mentioning.

Years ago, when remodeling our cottage on Swan Ave., in Newaygo, Michigan, we found a KENT COUNTY DIPLOMA in the wall for a Selah Hughes for completing courses of Study in the various branches as prescribed to be taught in the Public Schools of Kent County, Michigan. Diploma given in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Selah Hughes on the 14th day of June 1909.
This all we have and know about Selah Hughes...wondering if she may be related to the family tree you are working on?
