Nan,
the only Laurel Fork I know of is in Carroll Co VA near the Patrick Co
line... Since the New River only dips into Ashe and Alleghany in 2 places,
I'd say it is the Laurel (?) community of Alleghany.... the name escapes
me.....
Were those land grant numbers ? if so, we need to order the land grant files
from Raleigh. All I have ordered from Raleigh from the 1700's have the
drawing of the land by a surveyor and names the chain carriers. They are
great for seeing if there was a bend in the river or creek. They also mention
adjoining grantees.
I know William Lenoir or someone named Lenoir owned land somewhere in that
Laurel (?) vicinity, because several Willey, Cheek and Fender deeds mention
"Lenoir's corner or Lenoir's line".... 3 or 4 of we cousins have the old
deeds and we passed them around and looked at them and all agreed the word
looks like Lenoir, in the terrible handwriting of some of the officials.
Jesse Tolliver lived somewhat in that area, and William Lenoir made an
affadavit for Jesse's Rev War pension application.

This area of present Alleghany is near where we find the stray Andrew
Carpenter in the early 1800's......... to my knowledge this isn't the Andreas
Carpenter of the German line, so who was Andrew Carpenter ? Perhaps land
grants from William Lenoir would tell us, I hope ?
