I have a William A. Crouse who married (first) Mahala Ward and (second)
Elizabeth Savage. Mahala was several years his senior and brought 2
daughters to the marriage (father unknown), Mary and Lucy. He was the great
grandson of Jacob and Sarah Edwards Crouse/Krause/Kraus. The following is
from the 1870 census (William would have been about 22):

1870 NC Census, Alleghany Co., Cherry Lane

Crouse William age? b NC
Mahala 45 b VA
Mary 12 b NC
Lucy 10 b NC
Henry 2 b NC
Living in the same household was John Edwards, age 75 or 95 b NC and
Lucy Ward age 75.
