Corrected paragraph about the CLARK family. Remember, I am quoting from
Francis Speight's article back in 1963.
"I judge that the Clarks were of some importance in the early 1800s, for on
a map of NC,
published in 1808, the only words put down in the area that became Snakebite
Township are Lumber Bridge and J. CLARK."
Can anyone identify the exact map he might have been referring to???
=========more about Clark family from Molly======
The Clark family was indeed one of the most influential families in Bertie.
There is just as much info on the Clarks in the Lewis Thompson papers as
their is info on the
Thompson/Urquharts.
LT married Margaret Ann Cathcart Clark, Whose
parents were William McKenzie Clark and Martha Boddie Williams. The
J.Clark you mention was probably John McKenzie Clark, brother to William
M. Clark. That generation of Clark brothers all sent their daughters to
an Episcopal boarding school in New Jersey in the 1840s.
