LaRae just provided us with this excellent review of two book on the Civil
War in NC> () if you have other questions about them.
Divided Allegiances by Gerald Thomas was the first book he wrote in response
to findings he uncovered which showed that almost as many men from Bertie
fought for the Union during the war as did men for the Confederacy. In this
first book he gives us the names and regiments for all of the men from Bertie
that fought on either side and gives historical background for their
experiences. He also touches on the serious consequences met by the men and
their families who fought for the Union both during and after the war. Decent
index for the text of the book but not for the Appendices which contain the
names of the soldiers by reginment and company.
Bertie in Blue was the sequel to Divided Allegiances and discusses only the
experiences of Union soldiers from Bertie, black and white. Very good index
which includes the appendices which, again, list the soldiers by regiment and
company. There is an additional appendix which lists men who fought for both
sides!
