Lots of HUGUENOT "echoes" here, as you'd expect in Henrico (& Goochland). You
might want to see what's been posted on USGENWEB for these areas, ANCESTRY,
&c. Is there a FONTAINE-L group? A CROSS-L group? BARNES-L group?
If you saw previous postings, I may have said that BENJAMIN BARNES will in
Gates Co., 1809, has witnesses: JOHN ODOM, EDWARD VANN, LUTEN LEWIS. One
LUTON LEWIS Gates Co. will 1807 (1811) had wife Peggy, sons ELVEY (mine), &
LUTON, brother Phillip, son Phillip, daus. Eliz., Nancy and Priscilla Lewis,
and child in esse. Wits: Jos. Speight, and Eff Lewis. 2nd LUTEN LEWIS's will
in Gates Co. 1815 declared UNCLE BENJAMIN ODOM, GRANDFATHER JOHN SMITH, UNCLE
JNO. SMITH. This 2nd Luten Lewis is probably the son of that name (brother of
my Elvey) mentioned in the 1st Luton Lewis's will.
Additionally, the will of CYPRIAN CROSS in Gates Co., 1809 (1810) has wife
Christian, sons Riddick, Abraham and Jesse R. Cross, DAUGHTER PRISCILLA LEWIS'
CHILDREN BETSEY, PHILLIP & NANCY, daughters Nancy Vann, Elizabeth Vann, and
Salley Cross, son Taylor Cross, John Vann Exr. Test, Jas. Usher, Jas.
Williams, WM. L. SMITH.
It's interesting for me to note that this VANN line out of Gates (Cf. Worth
Ray's work), in some of it's members, are later in GEORGIA. Robert Rogers m.
Sallie VANN (both part-blood Cherokees out of GA) who settled finally c1835 in
the Going Snake Dist, now OK, where Clement Vann Rogers was b. 1839. Clem
Rogers m. Mary America Schrimsher of Tahlequah (1/4 Cherokee), her father of
Dutch extraction and her mother half-Welsh and half-Indian. Mary America
(Schrimsher) Rogers was mother of WILL ROGERS, the humorist. Mary's
background was that she was a daughter of Martin Matthew Schrimsher m.
ELIZABETH HUNT GUNTER (1/2 Cherokee), daughter of JOHN GUNTER, white Cherokee
trader and founder of (later called) Guntersville. John Gunter (b. c1750-54),
trader, m. Ghi-go-he-li (full-blood Cherokee of the Paint Clan). John Gunter
was brother of my line's Augusta (1) Gunter (b. 1760-70).
If these Gates Co. people are of interest, Eddie, you'll have to take it from
here. The work load's about to kill me (Start at 5:30 a.m. and don't quit
until 9:30-10:00 p.m. Even eat lunch sitting at the computer). At age 66, I
just can't keep that up. I'm so tired when I go to bed that I can't relax and
sleep for another hour. Everything aches.
Anyway, thought these records were particularly revealing and that you'd want
them & also Mary N. in Auburn, AL.
