Subject: LEE CONNECTIONS AMONG LEWIS LINES
Date: Mon, 19 Oct 1998 02:55:00 EDT

RICHARD LEWIS of Granville Co., NC (d. c1744), father of PATIENCE (LEWIS) POPE
PRYOR, widow of JACOB POPE, who m2. ROBERT PRYOR, SR. of Granville Co., NC.
At the time of her father's death in 1744, PATIENCE was an unmarried girl.
PATIENCE's m1, JACOB POPE's inventory was taken in 1752 Edgecombe Co., NC.
PATIENCE & ROBERT PRYOR's son, ROBERT PRYOR ( grand juror Jefferson Co., GA
1797, d. 1820 Jefferson Co., GA ) was father of LYDIA PRYOR m. NEEDHAM LEE,
SR. (of Jefferson Co., GA). NEEDHAM LEE, SR (Godfrey, Robert, John Lee, Esq.
of Johnston Co., NC). As well, EMELINE LEWIS, dau/o of ELVEY LEWIS OF GATES
CO., m. NEEDHAM LEE, JR., 1835.

IS THERE A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE TWO LEWIS LINES? I don't as yet know, but
suspect it.

GRANVILLE GRANTS IN NC:
William Adkins plat 2 Feb. 1748 for 444 a. in Edgecombe Co., joining Walter
Pitts, Pollocks line, RICHD LEWIS, Aaron Etheridge, and Thomas Thrower CC:
Matthew Jones, Thomas Thrower Jos Lane Survr

(There's "a" Richard Lewis in Anson County 1752, 1753 N side Catawba River,
BUT don't know that man's ID)

I suspect that the Richard Lewis in Granville/Edgecombe Co., NC, either is the
same man, or son of the man following:

BERTIE COUNTY, NC
John Gray to RICHARD LEWIS (LEWES) OF ISLE OF WIGHT, VA. May 13, 1729. ....
250 a. on SS Morratuck [KG: Roanoke] River and NS Arthur's Swamp (or Looking
Glass Swamp). Being a survey made for William Gray and by him lapsed for not
seating. Then granted to John Gray on April 1, 1727. wit: William Gray,
Thomas Craghill. May 13, 1729.

NOTE: John Lee, Esq. was a Roanoke River settler in 1720 along with Needham
Bryan and John Wood.

WILLIAM POPE OF ISLE OF WIGHT, VA TO HENRY POPE Aug. 15, 1722...1/2 money pd
by my father, HENRY POPE, to George Smith...1/2 patent cont. 500 a. dated Dec
3, 1720. Sold by George Smith to Henry Pope. On SS Morattacky River adj.
Thomas Goodwin, After(?) Craford, JOHN POPE. Wit: JOHN BRYAN, John Grifith,
Thomas Boone. Aug. Crt 1723.

NOTE: There are a number of other POPEs in the same area. These are
exemplary, only.

Benjamin Lane to Robert Sims Aug. 1728...640 a. on SS Morattock River at
Conaconore Swamp. Pat. date Feb 1, 1725. Wit: JACOB POPE, William Cain.
Aug. Court 1728.

John Yelverton & wife Elizabeth to John Steward Nov. 12, 1723...100a. on SS
Morrattacky River on Flaggy Run. By pat. dated Mar 13, 1724. Adj. Robert
West. wit: NEEDHAM BRYAN, John Page.

KG: Sometime between 1744 and 1752 Jacob Pope's m1 (Patience Lewis's sister)
died, and he subsequently married Patience Lewis. As Patience (Lewis) Pope
married Robert Pryor c1755, perhaps Patience herself was b. c1725. If so,
she'd have been born about the same estimated time as ROBERT, son of JOHN LEE,
ESQ.
PATIENCE POPE took the inventory of her dec'd husband, JACOB POPE in
Edgecombe Co., as admrx. May 15, 1752, which included Jacob's first wife's
apparel. The estate was divided between PATIENCE and eight Pope children,
which of whom were her sister's and which her own is unknown: Joel, Elijah &
Jonathan Pope were under guardianship of PATIENCE POPE; John Crowell was
guardian of Richard and Benjamin Pope; RICHARD LEWIS was guardian to William
and Jordan Pope, and West Pope was guardian to Charity Pope. The orphan
William Pope had received a negro girl by gift from his grandfather, August
Ct. 1752. Account current with the admrx., Feb. 22, 1758 (Ct. Mts.)
The division of the estate of RICHARD LEWIS was distributed among the
widow (unnamed), RICHARD LEWIS, JACOB POPE,WILLIAM WHITEHEAD, JOHN CROWELL,
MARY LEWIS AND PATIENCE LEWIS, as per order of the court May 1744. MARY LEWIS
and PATIENCE LEWIS were made equal to the other legatees of the estate in
amounts equal to the other recipients before the estate of the deceased. Nov.
6, 1744, August Ct. 1746.
1783, June 10 - Revolutionary Pay Vouchers for the State of NC, No.
427, PATIENCE PRYOR was allowed L1, 2s.10p for a claim she exhibited. The
approved claim entitled PATIENCE PRYOR to be considered as participating in
the Rev. War. Patience's husband, Robert Pryor, and John Pryor both died in
1771, pre-RW, yet John's widow (Margaret Gaines) and Robert's widow (Patience
Lewis Pope) were both listed in Revolutionary Accounts, thus living in 1783.
John Pryor was father of Robert who m. Patience.

ROBERT LEE, son of John Lee, Esq., named his eldest son LEWIS LEE, a
name not seen previously in the line (i.e., John Lee, Esq. didn't name a son,
Lewis Lee), nor was the name Lewis Lee among Robert Lee's brother's children.
Robert Lee m. Elizabeth ______.

I will be testing the implications of these records as I go along.
