Hi folks,

I'm looking for my long-lost great grandfather. His name was Charles
Freeman. I know he was from North
Carolina, and I'm pretty sure he came from Bertie County. Any help in
tracking him down would be greatly appreciated.

What I know for sure about my great-grandfather is that he was born in North
Carolina, was in the army, came to San Francisco in about 1900, married my
great-grandmother, Elizabeth Agnes O'Connor and took her to Fort Monroe
Virginia where he was stationed . My great-grandmother gave birth to my
grandfather Revel Lorenzo Freeman at Fort Monroe in 1900. She left Charles
Freeman 2 years later and returned to San Francisco. Nobody in my family
ever heard from Charles Freeman again.

>From the 1900 census, I know there was a Charles C. Freeman stationed on
Alcatraz with 3rd Artillery, Company N. He was a corporal. This census
shows Charles C. Freeman as being married just 4 months. I also know that
this regiment was sent out from Ft Monroe. I checked enlistment data at the
National Archives, and sure enough, there was a Charles C. Freeman of Bertie
County who enlisted at Fort Monroe in 1896. This Charles C. Freeman was
listed as being in 3rd Artillery, Company N. The last hitch ended in 1905,
and his last whereabouts as far as the army is concerned is Hickory NC.

I checked the 1920 census, and found a Charles C. Freeman, 43 years old,
living in Hickory. He is listed as married, but living alone. He sold
lumber for a living.

I suspect that my grandfather is Charles Crandall Freeman of Colerain, whose
family lineage I found posted on the Ancestry web site. This guy is about
the right age. He is listed as being born in November 1876, while the
Charles C. Freeman I found in the enlistments said he was born in November
1874. Charles Crandall Freeman had a brother named Revel, same name as my
grandfather, and was married to a woman with the last name O'Connor, just
like my great-grandmother. The person who posted the family knows nothing
more about the O'Connor woman but her name, no age, no date of marriage, no
children.

I also checked the 1880 census for boys in Bertie County with the name
Charles Freeman. I found only 1 likely candidate, and that was Charles
Crandall Freeman.

I know there are living descendents of this Freeman family in Bertie County,
but I don't know how to contact them. I'd sure like to know Charles
Crandall Freeman's whereabouts when he died (it is supposed to be in 1976).
I'd like to know more about this guy and nail down the question as to
whether he was really my great-grandfather. Anyone who knows anything about
him or his family would be doing me a great favor by passing it along.

Thanks

Cindy Rubio
