Here's some additional tips in locating the Slave owner identification.

If checking the census index doesn't provide the answer, I would also
check the NC Will Books for wills of persons with the same last name
that would hopefully list the slaveowner or his father. I would also
look at GENFORUM (http://www.genforum.com/) for the slaveowner's surname
and search the site with
the keywords North Carolina and then read all the messages. You could
also read the postings to see who is the most knowledgable about the
early mentions of the surname and E-mail that person.
