Hello Sally and the Bertie list:

Sally, I enjoyed seeing the will of Josiah Perry that you were so kind to
provide to the list. It is just a long shot, but might you have any
information on the father and/or siblings of Josiah Perry? One of the
daughters of Josiah Perry was Nancy Balfour, who had a son named Josiah
Balfour, and she was given land in Edgecombe Co. According to a record on the
LDS web site, the husband of Nancy Perry was William Balfour of Edgecombe Co.

The last record that I have found in NC concerning my gg-grandfather came
from an Edgecombe Co. court record of 29 Nov. 1810, where Josiah Bullock (13
years and six months of age) was apprenticed to William Balfour to learn the
art and calling of a merchant.

Two other daughters of Josiah Perry were Penelope Sessums and Christian
Walton. The grandfather of the Josiah Bullock apprenticed to William Balfour
was James Bullock. In 1749, James Bullock bought land in Bertie Co. from
Joshua Wilkinson, which was at the head of Walton's Creek and adjacent to
land of Walter Sessums. I don't know if he was the Walton of Walton's Creek
or not, but earlier in 1736 land for a water grist mill was appraised by
William Walton, James Bullock, and Joshua Wilkinson.

With the grandson Josiah of James Bullock being apprentised to the husband of
Josiah Perry's daughter Nancy and with James Bullock having owned land nearby
to Sessums and Walton families in Bertie Co, who might be related to families
into which two other daughters of Josiah Perry married, this does peak my
interest.

I do not know the name of the wife of James Bullock, but I am wondering if it
could be that she was a sister to Josiah Perry, with their father possibly
being Josiah Perry, Sr, for whom Josiah Bullock might have been named. If so,
the wife of William Balfour to whom Josiah Bullock was apprentised would have
been his first cousin, once removed. Just a long shot, mind you, but I am
wondering if someone on the list has additional information on the ancestry
of the Josiah Perry who made his will in 1820. My best regards, Ron Bullock
