>>>I was wondering something. There are so many areas that have been
mentioned
on the site. Is Sandy Point located in any of these areas? I am from the
Luten/Ward/Benbury family and I know the Lutens lived at Sandy Point. Are
any of the areas that you have given us information about areas of Bertie
County that I would want to pay close attention to?

Thanks, Lynn, for asking this question.
Sandy Point, according to Powell's gazeteer is:
The point of land presently in SE Bertie County between Salmon Creek and
Roanoke River.
Appears on maps Gascoyne of 1682; Hack map of 1684.
This is a fairly large area....but I think we might designate it as the
Merry Hill . (That is the Township name today, I believe)
And IF I changed my designation on the INDEX page to say: Towns and
Townships....then we'd cover that area, and start building the cemeteries,
families, churches, etc in that region.
And since you sent in your names....we'll begin with yours!
Luten
Ward
Benbury
The most famous names/ homes of that region, I suppose, would be Avoca,
Buckleberry, Scotch Hall, Capehart's Fishery
Shipyard Landing is on the map. That must be where they built ships!
We have some information on the Fishing Industry on our "industry" page.
It would be great if someone would volunteer to "organize" that section of
the county...
