Will of Charles Dunning, Bertie County, NC written 4 Feb 1796, recorded
Nov. Term, 1796

In the name of God Amen, I Charles Dunning of Bertie County and State of
North Carolina but frail and weak in body, but of sound and disposing mind,
thanks be unto God for the same, calling to mind the uncertainity of my
body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make
and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following------

First, I lend unto my beloved wife, Celia Dunning, one third part of my
land and plantation. I________during her natural life or widowhood but
in case she shall marry, then for to be rented out by my Executor until
my son Eli Dunning shall arrive at the age of twenty-one years.-----

Also I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Celia Dunning one negro man
named Adam, one horse, with briddle and saddle, one feather bed and furniture
and as much corn and bacon as will be sufficient for to support her until
the first day of January next, also I give unto her_______ frames, two
earthen dishes and one Tea kittle, to her and her heirs forever.------

Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Exum Dunning the ____ land and as
far on the other part of my land as shall be equal to one half of the land
I now live on, one Negro boy named Jacob, one feather bed, furniture and
one pott, to him and his heirs forever.-----

Item, I give and bequeath to my son Eli Dunning the remainder part of my
land that is not already given away, one Negro woman named Hannah, one
feather bed and furniture, and one pott, to him and his heirs forever.------

It is my will and desire that all the remainder of my Estate not already
given away shall be sold at public sale by my Executors and the money arising
therefrom to be applied towards paying all my just debts, and funeral charges,
and should there be any residue, for to be put out on interest and remain
until my two sons shall arrive at the age of twenty-one years, and then
to be equally divided between them.-----

Lastly, I nominate, constitute and appoint my friends, Abner Perry, Samuel
Dunning, ______ and John Askew, executors to this my last will and testament,
and I do hereby disannul revoke and make void, all other wills, legattes,
and bequests whatsoever by me made, ratifying and confirming this and no
other to be my last will and testament, in witness of I have hereunto set
my hand and seal this fourth day of February, Anno Dom. 1796.

Signed, sealed, published, pronounced, and declared by the Testator to
be his last will and textament in presence of:

Abner Perry, Samuel Dunning___, Jonas Rawls, Hosea Rawls, Thomas Conner.

The last will and testament of Charles Dunning, dec., was proved in open
court by the oath of Jonas Rawls and Thomas Conner two of the subscribing
witnesses and ordered to be recorded.
