My ancestor, James Ward Etheridge, moved from Bertie Co. to Winston County,
Mississippi. (I think there was some time spent in Alabama, as his wife was
born there, and there's a big gap in my timeline (1840-1870), and would love any
help with this.)
The Etheridge family in VA & NC used the name Marmaduke very frequently. It
is believed this began with a good friend (perhaps relative) to the original
immigrant, Thomas Etheridge. Thomas arrived in Virginia (Norfolk County) in
the early 1640s. The friend and close neighbor was Marmaduke Marrington.
Thomas named a son Marmaduke and subsequent generations used the name over and
over.
There is also the possibility that James Ward Etheridge's grandmother was a
Judith Marmaduke. If this was a big family in the area, some of the many
people named Marmaduke could be named for their mother's surname, as well as after
an individual.
