Hi,
That investment varied from state to state. In GA all of this was
changed in 1867 and women were fully invested with the same legal rights,
sans voting, as men. This person is also correct in that children of
siblings often ended up in the families of their uncles, aunts and
grandparents, however I do not know of any instances were their names were
changed to that of the sibling/parents, although I am sure some were some.
One of the more often cases is when the mother died and the father dumped
their children off on her siblings or parents. This happened all the time
and still does.

The only instance I know of when the names of their children were
actually changed was due to divorce. This happened to the children of
Robert POTTER (1799-1842) and Isabella TAYLOR in Halifax County, NC. She
changed the names of their two children to PELHAM, her mother's maiden name,
after her divorce from POTTER in 1834. However, this does not really have
an effect on later descendants of this family because these two kids did not
survive to adulthood, according to my information.
