Tips for Reading Old Records

I have been reading original court records for years and I would like to add
one more hint. I call it "know your County Clerk". Read a number of same
type of records unrelated to your family. You will get used to the hand
writing, but better yet he may have written the same word more clearly in another
deed or will. The level of education and handwriting skills varied greatly.
His legal vocabulary may be one he developed on his own. Too many variables
in old handwritings, but at least they will be his variable. Another added
benefit, County Clerks were often in service for many years.
