Lynn McCarthy thought you'd all enjoy this site. The surname she used is
one she knew I would be interested in, but you can adapt this to your own use.

Colonial Williamsburg Foundation - Past Portal. This is a wonderful site,
if you haven't explored it.
Click on Search The Digital Archive;
then Browse;
then the VA. Gazette.
You can hit, say "R" and you'll start seeing all kinds of things and
they're not presented in alpha order. But, for the R's, you'll see Ruffin -
Rules and Squares.
Click on and go from there, like
http://www.pastportal.com/cwdl_new/VA_Gazet/Images/D/1776/0254hi.jpg ,
column two.
I know you're interested in history and other than putting your eyes out
from lingering too long in front of the screen, this newspaper is simply
facinating. All kinds of items on slaves/slavery. You can find every thing
from surnames to place names, including Bertie County. For the curious and
the ones who love history, it's an endless source of information, even if
what's read doesn't pertain to one's family.
