The following is also from # 17 - The Early Settlers in Bladen County
THESE ARE TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT:
"The earliest land grants of which there is record were made under the Lords Proprietors in 1727."
"A land grant of 600 acres of land on the northwest side of the northwest branch of the Cape Fear River was made to David Donahoe on May 19, 1727. A grant of 640 acres on the southwest of the Cape Fear River was made to John Baptista Ashe on November 29, 1727. Ashe also acquired another tract of land by grant on May 6, 1730. His property was known as Ashwood, although he did not live in Bladen County. He was one of the most prominent men of the state and lived at Groverly Hill in what is now Brunswick County." "In October, 1728, Richard Singletary was granted 1000 acres on the North East side of the North West Branch of the Cape Fear, and on the same day was granted 1000 acres on the South West side of the Cape Fear (all in Bath County). The next year he was granted 1280 on the North West Branch of the Cape Fear. In 1732 he was one of the first Justices of the Peace. Doubtless, this is the oldest family name in Bladen County. His sister, Sarah, married Thomas Robeson,!
Sr., distinguished planter of the county."
