" . . . Benjamin Robeson DeVane, Sr. (James, John, Thomas) (4 February
1783-1858 Bladen County) married Ann Davis (about 1783-before 1850),
daughter of Captain Francis Davis and Tobitha DeVane. They were first
cousins. Their children were Richard P. DeVane (1823); Cornelius DeVane
(1828); Benjamin Robeson DeVane, Jr.; Bryant DeVane (1830); Mary C. DeVane
(1833); and Francis Davis DeVane (1834). . .".

"From 1812-1815 there was a second war with Great Britain, the War of
1812. The British fleet occupied Ocracoke from July 12-16, 1813. Many men
from Bladen County volunteered for the militia to fight the British. Two of
these men were Benjamin Devane and Benjamin Robeson Devane, Sr. The former
was born 1796 in New Hanover County, NC. He was one of the seven children
of John Devane, Jr. (1775-1802) and wife, Ann Julia Davis, widow of a Mr.
Evans. This Benjamin Devane's two brothers, William Devane and Francis
Devane, also served in the War if 1812. Benjamin Devane (1796-1878) married
Mary Rogers of New Hanover County. They moved to Georgia and later to
Florida. They, too, had seven children. Benjamin died 28 October 1878.
The family is buried in Florida.
The Latter Benjamin Robeson DeVane (4 February 1783-1858), son of James
DeVane (1757-1840) and Ann Robeson, was born in New Hanover County, NC and
died in Bladen County. He served as a private in the NC militia in 1812.
He married Ann Davis, daughter of Francis Davis, formerly of South Carolina.
They had four children: Benjamin Robeson DeVane (1829-1897), Bryant DeVane
(1830), Mary DeVane (1833), who married a Mr. Cotter, and Francis Davis
DeVane (1835-c1891). Benjamin R. DeVane, Sr. died 1858 in Bladen County.
James DeVane (1757-1840), Francis Davis DeVane (1756-1847), Benjamin R.
DeVane, Sr. (1783-1858), John C. DeVane (1790-1864) and other DeVanes are
buried in Sampson County. . . " (Note: directions are given to the cemetery)
397 BENJAMIN ROBESON DEVANE,JR
"Benjamin Robeson DeVane, Jr. (22 April 1826-11 October 1897) (CSA) was
a son of Benjamin Robeson DeVane (1783-1858) and Ann Davis, daughter of
Francis Davis and Tibitha DeVane (first cousins). Benjamin "Bennie" married
Elizabeth "Betsy" Ann Cain (25 November 1839-29 August 1919), daughter of
William Cain, Jr. (17 October 1809-27 January 1866). Bennie and Betsy were
married 23 December 1858 at the home of the bride by Wesley Purdie, Esquire.
According to the Diary of Elizabeth E. Robeson, ". . they had a pleasant
party. . .' They resided in White Oak and are buried in the D.B. Melvin
Cemetery. Bennie and Betsy had two children: Charles Thomas DeVane (18
September 1859-2 March 1945) married Virginia "Jennie" Jones (17 October
1868-1934). Their children were Benjamin Cleveland DeVane (1884-1967),
Thomas Franklin DeVane (1887-1950), Boyd B. DeVane (1893-1957), Charles
Curie DeVane (1897-2975), Joe Davis DeVane (1900-1964), and Mary Lenora
William Francis (Franklin) DeVane (10 September 1861-30 May 1949)
married Sarah Margaret Byrd (24 September 1867-3 January 1920). . . " Note:
