Hi Don,
I am not sure which of the several Samuel McNeely's it may have been on this particular deed. (Samuel was used frequently in naming McNeely children). But let me venture a guess.
Part of the reason behind this deed was that Jane (McTaggart) Hyatt; Elizabeth (McTaggart) Ballew; and Margaret (McTaggart) Cox were all sisters and children of Thomas McTaggart who died in Burke Co., NC in 1831. (Thomas was the son of John McTaggart, an immigrant from Ireland, who was killed in 1813 by two of his slaves. I believe that he had a fair amount of land holdings.) When Thomas died, his land was divided between his heirs. Another younger sister, Martha Patsy McTaggart, married a Samuel McNeely b. 13 Nov. 1815, d. 21 Mar. 1888. They married in 1848.
The deed is dated 1847 ( no month or day is given), but the sisters were "examined" by the judge on 24 Oct. 1848, and the "examination", maybe the deed too, was registered the 21 Oct. 1869. The "examination" by the judge was done privately from the husbands to determine if any of the wives were being coerced into selling their inheritance. I also know that many deeds were re-recorded after the Civil War, because many of them were destroyed. That may account for the 1869 date.
John McTaggart (the immigrant) had seven children. You descend from his oldest child Jane McTaggart, who married Thomas McNeely (also an immigrant). I am descended from John McTaggart's second child, Thomas, whose daughter Elizabeth married John Ballew. I came across this information while researching my Ballew line.
I have a descendants report of John McTaggart given to me by Robert McNeely who has done quite alot of research on the McNeely line. It appears that many of the children married their cousins, as was common in that day. So there are lots of Samuel's, Robert's, John's, James', etc.
I am happy to share any information I have. Let me know what information you have and I'll send you what I've got. I haven't been able to "jump the pond" yet with my research, so John is the oldest in that line that I have. It seems he may have come from County Antrim in N. Ireland about 1765-1770. According to the info given to me, it appears that all of his children were born in Ireland, the youngest being born abt. 1770. I wonder if he traveled back and forth a few times to Ireland and the family came later. I've found some land records in Rutherford Co. where he carried the chain and also acquired land so I know he was here in the 1760's.
Hope this helps.
