This is in reply to Ken CUTHBERTSON's () Sept. 28th and Sept. 29th postings to the Cabarrus Co., NC, list titled "New to List -- Researching Conder."

An article titled "CONDER - GOODNIGHT" appears on page 154 of the book "The Heritage of Old Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, 1763-2003," which was published in 2006 by The Old Mecklenburg County Heritage Book Committee and County Heritage, Inc. This article was submitted by Patricia HINKLE SHEMENSKI of North Canton, OH.

Following are some excerpts from the above-mentioned CONDER - GOODNIGHT article:

"Hans George Konder arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Virtuous Grace on Sept. 24, 1737. He had been born in Trier, Germany, in 1706. He may have been the John George Kontner who had a land patent for 168 acres in Lancaster Co., Pa., on Nov. 28, 1743. A George Conder bought 100 acres on a branch of English Buffalo Creek in Mecklenburg Co., N.C., from Governor Arthur Dobbs on June 25, 1764. This was either the immigrant Hans George or his son George who was born circa 1735/37. From here on, the records are confusing as there were men named George Conder (and even Gonder) in each generation; and each son, whether his name was Peter, Lewis, etc., seemed to have a son named George. A George Gonder took up several vacant land entries in Rowan Co., N.C., in 1778. A George "Conter" married Aby Atkins Aug. 3, 1774 in Rowan Co. On Feb. 9, 1780, the will of George Gonder was proved by Philip Verbal ... in Rowan Co. This George was likely the immigrant of 1737, Hans Georg Konder. George Conder served in the North Carolina Continental Line #560, Halifax District, in the Revolutionary War. He supposedly received bounty land in Kentucky for this service, but this has not been proved. A George Conder wrote a will in Mecklenburg Co. on July 5, 1790; this will was probated Sept. 3, 1799 in Washington Co., Ky., naming his wife Barbara and children Peter, John, Margaret and George. This George was probably the one born circa 1735/37. Another George Conder married a Susanna ___ before 1789 when their son David was born. Susanna may have been the daughter of Hans Michael Goodnight. A record of this marriage has not been found; it could have taken place in either Mecklenburg Co. or Lincoln Co., Ky. It is not known when this George and Susanna died. Their son, David Conder, married Mary Applegate; they moved from Washington Co., Ky., to Indiana in the 1820's."

The article goes on to talk about Hans Michael GOODNIGHT, including his purchase of land in Mecklenburg Co. with Christopher LANDESS, both of whom are my direct ancestors. It continues, "An undocumented source says that Susanna Goodnight, daughter of Michael and his first wife, married a George Conder, but no record of this marriage has been found. ... On Nov. 3, 1806, George and Susanna Conder sold their land in Washington Co., Ky; John Goodnight was a witness. This John Goodnight married Margaret (Peggy) Conder, the sister of David Conder."

Also see my May 22, 2006, posting to the GOODNIGHT list, located at the following site, which lists the following for Hans Michael GOODNIGHT's daughter Susan: "SUSAN GOODNIGHT, b. Abt. 1751, GERMANY; m. GEORGE CONDER, JR.; b. Abt. 1758." Information previously obtained from the above-mentioned David DUNHAM states that Susan GOODNIGHT and George CONDER, Jr., were the parents of Mary Margaret CONDER, b. Sept. 15, 1783, who m. John Henry GOODNIGHT (s/o Henry GOODNIGHT, Hans Michael GOODNIGHT), Mar. 14, 1805, Washington Co., KY.

I am trying to unravel the family of origin for my 3xg-grandfather Thomas
Conder, who was born ca. 1802. The first documented date we have for him is
his
1823 marriage in Mercer County, KY, to Nancy Whittinghill. But, family
records indicate that the Conders were from North Carolina, and my research
points
to the Mecklenburg / Cabarrus County area.

Two Conder households are listed in Mercer County, KY, in 1810. They are
John Conder and George Conder. If they are the sons listed in the 1799 Will
of
George Conder (1737-1799), they also had a brother Peter Conder, and a
sister
Margaret Conder Young.

The 1800 census for Cabarrus County shows the household of a John Conder.
And there is a 1799 marriage bond for John "Conter" and Margaret Mack (or,
Mock). The 1810 Cabarrus index shows the household of a Peter Conder. There
are
LDS postings for the marriage of a Peter Conder and Elizabeth Goodnight ca.
1792, and for a George Conder and Susanna Goodnight ca. 1782 (before
Cabarrus was
formed).

I do believe the Conders were of German Reformed heritage, and I see that
there are several congregations of that heritage in Cabarrus County. The
family
later joined the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

So, I'm hoping somone on the list might be able to help me find out more on
these Conders, and maybe even track down Thomas's parents, etc.

Dear Dave,

I'm only just beginning to wade in the Conder waters, so I don't know what
the connections are yet. The little I have found is the lore / belief that the
NC Conders were offspring of Hans George "Konder" who arrived in Lancaster,
PA, in 1734. The next generation are said to have moved south and settled in
the Mecklenburg County area. Hans George had a brother Peter who came with him,
but I've not seen claims of descendants or further info. on him.

George Conder, whose family I'm investigating, was born ca. 1737. He married
Anna Barbara Schneider in 1765 in NC. He died in 1799 in Washington County,
KY. The offspring listed in his will are John, Peter, George, and a daugther
Margaret Young. I've seen lists with additional offspring listed on
Ancestry.com, etc., but don't know the proof. (My Thomas is listed on some of those
lists, even though he was born 3 years after George died!)

At least some of George and Anna Barbara's family moved to Washington and
Mercer Counties in KY, and that's where my Thomas first appears in the offical
records (so far as we now know) with the record of his 1823 wedding. Thomas
later moved (ca. 1840) with his wife and family to Owen County, IN, where there
already were some Conders living. But I've not found their connection...
though Jacob Conder (1775-1858) is on some of the Ancestry lists of George and Anna
Barbara's kids. Thomas later moved ot McLean County, IL, where he died in
1865.

The biography of Thomas's son, Henry G. Conder (1826-1887), published in a
local history ca. 1876, gives some info. on Thomas and says that the Conder
family was from the Carolinas.

So, those are the bits I do know. Hopefully I can discover additional info.
that will clarify the Carolina family links. From what I know at the moment,
Cabarrus County seems to be the best place to begin to look for those links.
