On Saturday, September 28, 2002 at 9:00am the grave of Capt. Martin
DAVENPORT will be dedicated as a Revolutionary War Soldier. It is in
Bright's Cemetery on private property owned by UNIMIN off 19-E about 5 miles
N of Spruce Pine in the Ingalls community. The ceremony is in conjunction
with the re-enactors of the Victorious Over the Mountain March to King's
Mountain.
Martin Davenport's son William lived in Happy Valley. He was married to Mary
Lenoir Gordon and is buried by her at Ft.Defiance. They had daughters. At
least one married and has descendants in Caldwell county. The beautiful
Clover Hill Plantation was built for her. She was Sophia Caroline Davenport
1812-1860. She married Edmund Walter Jones 1811-1876. They had William
Davenport Jones, Col. John T.Jones, Walter Lenoir Jones, Edmund 'Coot' Jones
and Patterson Harper Jones.
It is my understanding that only Edmund and Eugenia Lewis Jones had
children. They were Edmund 'Ned' Jones and Augusta Lewis Jones. We would
love to have descendants of William present for this dedication.
