I have been researching the Admiralty Records for the area of Pamlico Sound and Ocracoke Inlet. I found a MARK MASON at Portsmouth Island, Carteret County, who was a pilot at Ocracoke Inlet in 1877. The records show that he risked his life in a daring adventure to save a ship that had been abandoned and was about to break up in the rough surf during a storm off the coast.
