Does anyone know which current creek was known as Bartram's Creek in the 1700s? Per Wm. Powell in his Gazetteer it was later known as Barns Creek. From the deeds I've looked at it was west of Goose Creek and I suspect it was either present-day Hunting Island Creek or Deer Creek near Cape Carteret. It was named for William Bartram who was one of the earliest settlers in the western part of the county. He was killed during the Tuscarora War, however the terms Bartram's Creek, Bartram's Point, and Bartram's line were used until at least the 1740s.
