Hello Rhonda,

Be sure to examine the offerings in the public library there. It is a small
room but has much to offer in family histories and references. Also visit
the County History Museum which is housed in the old courthouse on the
Square. Talking with the volunteers there could bring some other resources
to mind. I think that the Burch Blaylock Genealogical Paper Collection is
housed there now. Blaylock was a former Clerk of Court who had tremendous
foresight in retaining copies of individuals' family research, and in
collecting newspaper articles, and cemetery inventories, and much more.

Yanceyville is only minutes away from the Danville Public Library where you
will find the repository of the VA-NC Piedmont Genealogical Society and the
library's own rather extensive collection of research data. The VA-NC
Piedmont Genealogical section is manned with volunteers (wonderful ones) and
it would be wise to call ahead and see if someone will be there. That
section is kept locked when volunteers are not there; the libraries section
is still quite full of references which you will not find everywhere.
Historically, families along the VA-NC border bounced back and forth, you
will never know what you may find in some VA county records for ones living
in NC, and vice-versa.

And if you are not a North Carolina Resident, and have time, it is also very
valuable to travel to Raleigh, NC to the State Archives. Most records from
all of the NC counties, covering from the earliest settlers up until about
1850, either in copy form or original form, can be found there. Records like
guardianship papers, marriage records, bastardy bonds, estate settlement
papers, wills, and other documents can be found there. The Archives is
located on Jones Street, adjacent to the NC Legislative Building, and is only
about an hour away from Yanceyville.

Good luck on your sojourn.

Best regards,

John Fox
Winston-Salem, NC
