Winston, a schoolteacher who enlisted in the Confederate Army at age 23 in Rockingham County, became Colonel commanding the 45th North Carolina, and (most significantly for me) became the key spokesman of the farmers' movement in North Carolina during the 1870s and 1880s. He lived many years after the war at Milton, then at "Hycotee" in Caswell County, North Carolina. and died at the last location.
