I'm still in search of the elusive Sylvester Fowler, father of John William
Fowler. John W.'s mother, who probably wasn't married to Sylvester, was
Mary Elizabeth Frerichs, born in Pickens, South Carolina but the family had
all moved to Monroe County, Tennessee by 1870. All I know of Mary Elizabeth
is she was a midwife and may have ranged over the mountains, delivering
babies. She had five children, four of whom are now identified. Besides
John William Fowler, there is Jane Frerichs who married Perley Brown and
lived in Polk County, Tennessee, Sarah Josephine Frerichs, also a midwife
who married Will Peels. The last identified child was Bud Sneed who died
before adulthood. I have found a Sylvester Fowler in 1880 in Cherokee
county, living with step-mother Martha and 'wife' Elizabeth. This Elizabeth
matches age and birthplace of my Mary Elizabeth who was known as Elizabeth
but missing from the household are Jane and John William who would have been
born by then. Most of the characters in my family saga lived most of their
lives in Tennessee but seem to turn up with frequency in Cherokee County.
Other family names are Collins, Dorsey, Griffitts, Garrett, Smith,
Vanderpool, Martin and Stiles. EdrieAnne Broughton
