Had this in my records and thought someone in the Lovingood family could use
it.
Peggy
LOVINGOODS- (Noah, George, and Wendall Lovingood). About the year 1835,
three brothers, Harmon, George, a Baptist preacher, and William Lovingood,
came to Cherokee Co. from Greenville Dist. S. C. They first attempted to
locate on Valley River near the present airport. They encountered
difficulties with the Indians and migrated to the Hanging Dog section. Here
they obtained grants, which totaled 6,000 acres. This was known as the
Lovingood donation. These brothers built a dam on Hanging Dog Creek and put
up an iron forge. They manufactured iron for the State in payment for the
land grants.
One of the Lovingood brothers, Bill, left the Hanging Dog section and
moved to Ga. near the Town of Morganton.
The first child born to George Washington & Nancy Lovingood is thought
to be the first white child born in this section. Children: Noah H; Jane;
Harmon R.; and Napolian B.
To Harmon and Winna Lovingood was born: Benjamine F. (Tip); Isaac;
Martha Anne; Samuel; Jesse E.; Amanda; Pheby; Eliza L.; George W.; Frances
M.; and Harmon M.
Benj. F. Lovingood had the following descendants: George, James, Anna
(Mrs. J. Palmer), Addie (Mrs. B. Palmer); Addie (Mrs. Johnson, of Athena,
Tenn.).
George Lovingood, son of B. F. Lovingood, m. Dora Treadway, dau. of
Rev. E. R. Treadway, Baptist minister and pastor of Peachtree and Hanging
Dog churches. They live at Grandview, three miles from Murphy. Children:
Ray, a merchant in Murphy; Homer, with General Motors in Springfield, Ohio;
Vernon lives at Gastonia; Jack, owns a drug store in Hendersonville, m. a
dau. of Dr. Heighway; Mrs. Fred Bates of Murphy; and Mrs. Maggie Anderson,
who lives with her parents.
James Lovingood, son of B. F. and Clair Bates Lovingood, was one of the
first students to enter the University of N. C. He taught school for 45
years, mostly in Cherokee Co. He served on the Board of County Commissioners
Children: Stanley; Wendall; Paul Harley; Ruby; Ralph, and Clair.
